A young bull’s breath mists in the frosty dawn as he surveys his competition. He repeatedly tried to peel off cows from a much larger bull’s harem. I never saw them tussle, though the scarring on this guy’s sides tells me he’s been in at least a few fights. While he was never successful, he did often covertly sneak into the cows to try to win some affection, but the big bull chased him off. Once, the chase led them straight at me, which was a hair raising moment, as you can imagine. In another year or two, this young male will likely find success in winning his own harem, perhaps replacing this year’s champion as his strength declines. October 2020.
